Green Diwali
A special assembly was put up by the
students of EVS Club to celebrate Diwali on 12 October 2017. It began with an
inspirational poem by Daizal, which highlighted the theme of Green Diwali. This
was followed by a powerful speech by Parmeet, which posed questions on the way
we celebrate this festival- insensibly burning crackers and wasting money. He
threw light on some very viable ways of celebrating Diwali in an eco- friendly
manner like choosing earthen diyas made by potters over electric lights, thus
saving electricity. Next in line was a very entertaining street play- ‘Swachh
Aur Harit Bharat’ which, like a mirror, reflected on how we never pay any heed
to the discomfort caused to the elderly, infants, the sick and animals during this
time of the year because of excessive smoke. All the students and teachers
then, took a pledge that they would not only abstain the use of fire crackers
rather will encourage others as well.
The audience enjoyed the show
thoroughly and expressed their appreciation with a loud round of applause. The
assembly was concluded with Principal Ma’am’s words of appreciation, and a
group photograph with the smiling green warriors.
To inspire the young minds the
street play was performed in the Junior School, and again on 13 October during
the Open House. We also took the opportunity of Open House to make our parents
a part of this green initiative. For this, a board was put up, whereupon the
parents shared their views on a Cracker Free Harit Diwali.
Tafsians never rest on their
laurels, so taking this campaign further, in collaboration with the Centre for
Environmental Health Foundation of India, an awareness seminar was organized in
the school on 16 October 2017. Students of class X attended this seminar, which
aimed at generating awareness on the issue of indoor and outdoor air pollution
and its adverse health effects. It also focused on the impact of smoke created
by fire crackers, emergent health issues and steps that can be taken to prevent
harmful effects during the winter smog.
