                  Convergence 2015

Convergence, an Inter School Knowledge festival is a platform for the blending of the three seemingly different fields of Debating, Quizzing and Creative writing. Convergence 2015 centred on the theme, FLAMES - an acronym for Food, Fashion, Literature, Art, Music, Entertainment, Sports and Science. Since we are the products of the age we live in, the program aimed at bringing the students close to the world around them, for the school believes that the youth must   reflect their times. Our aim was to create an experience whereby our students learnt from the world around us. To commemorate the 60th year of the school –the Diamond Jubilee Year, the base year was 1955.  The events focussed on events and happenings from 1955 to the current times.

The event spreading  over two days -22-23 April 2015 covered a preliminary round attended by three- member teams of 41 schools. The creative writing section consisted of Flash Fiction writing on given prompts. The written round of quiz was followed by debating in the extempore style. The two members of the team who sat for the quiz round took part in debating which was held in POOL A and POOL B. The third member wrote flash fiction on given prompts.

The scores of the three events quiz, debate and creative writing were added to arrive at the final scores and to decide the 8 qualifying teams for the semi-finals. The creative writing member joined the team at this stage for debating and quizzing.

The Semi-Final Round was marked by a style called Baton Debating where the debate-proposition was carried forward by the four schools of each pool in an interesting manner. Veering off the classical format, the schools through a draw of lots took turns to speak and take the baton from the previous speaker as per the number announced by the moderator, Mr. Arindam Bhattacharya of Cradle Sports. This resulted in lots of interesting and impromptu lines of thoughts emerging. The same method was followed for the opposition speakers. Following the debate was a four round quiz.

The Final face off round between four school teams was a group turncoat where speakers quickly swung from speaking from proposition to opposition in a group. Things got so heated at one moment, that groups began competing with each other in their bid to be heard while speaking at the same time. This was followed by four rounds of quizzing followed by a last round of debating. Since the topics were given on the spot the students had to display great presence of mind, wit and logical thinking. Students showed remarkable maturity and aplomb.

The panel of Judges included many ex –students of the school like Shayantani Das, St.Stephen’s College along with her batch mate Kadambari Bahl,Aniket Basu of the College of Arts and Commerce, Sakshi Chandra of Symbiosis Law School , Noida. In addition to this Mr. Rajesh Mishra Head Consultant IMS Learning Resources Private Limited lent his expertise by judging the event.
