    Camp Kanatal - Junior School

This adventure trip started on an excited note as 60 students of class IV and class V accompanied by 6 teachers boarded the buses at 9:30 pm on 10th of March for Kanatal, Uttarakhand.

After a 12 hours’ journey via scenic Chamba Valley the group reached Camp Kanatal which is situated at 8,400 ft. near Mussoorie. Tucked away in the midst of deep forests of oaks and set in the heart of the Indian Himalayas the beauty of the serene mountains was breath taking.

After a hearty, savoury breakfast in the dining area the students were allotted their tents. Each tent had an attached washroom with running water facility and 24hrs supply of electricity with an adequate back up. The cooperative staff happily and readily provided hot water for drinking as well as for washing purposes.

The day started with warm up exercises and endurance run, in the clearing, amidst picturesque dense pine, long wooded slopes of deodar, oak and rhododendron forests.

The weather played hookey, after lunch, in the second half of the day, as the heavens opened up. The children were packed off to their tents to escape the drizzling and the chilly temperature. But soon all was hunky dory as, to the delight of the group, there was unexpected snow fall. The snow covered tents were a sight to behold. After a steaming hot dinner everybody retired early to bed.

The next day dawned bright and sunny and after breakfast the group started for a long trek to Surkanda Devi temple. Perched on a peak, the temple demands a stiff two-km climb from devotees. To the intense delight of the students the temple courtyard was covered with pristine snow. Soon snow fights ensued, lopsided snow-men were built and excited squeals filled the courtyard.

Post lunch, back in the camp, the children were taken for various outdoor activities such as Burma bridge, parallel rope walk, wall/pillar climb etc. The Flying Fox Activity saw the students flying down the mountain slope, harnessed on to a tight rope.

The day concluded on an exalted note with bon fire, dance and music.

Thursday morning we bid a sad adieu to the lovely mountains and again boarded the buses. Stopping for lunch at Dehradun Mc Donalds was the highlight of the day. Here students enjoyed burgers and Pepsi and even celebrated a fellow student’s birthday with chocolate cake. The group arrived at the school at 10:30pm.

Beautiful and captivating environment, a stay in the tents, excellent camp food and the company of friends made for an unforgettable Camp Kanatal trip.

      Workshop - Junior School

      GOOD BYE OLD, HELLO NEW!

‘Change is the only factor that remains constant in our lives’

It is rightly said that in the voyage called life, after every few steps we encounter newness. To equip our young travellers with all the understanding that they need in order to have a smooth transition from Junior school to the Senior school, a workshop was conducted on 7 March 2014 by Ms. Yukti Maini (Counsellor) for the students of class V.

The workshop was an insight into the new world that children are going to travel to. It acquainted them with the opportunities, challenges and novelty that they will be experiencing soon. It is always believed that the unheard or unseen is more nerve wrecking thus to calm down the anxiety of children, all their concerns were shared. With the aim to instill the ability to adjust to change, children were made aware of the change in schedule, academic demands, interpersonal relationships and extended participation that they will be encountering. For majority of them it seemed like going out from a protected niche`to an unfamiliar place. Their feelings were respected and their concern was addressed through a video followed by a discussion that helped them identify their inner strength and goodness that reside in them. Through a short story children were provided with appropriate strategy to use in situations when things might not fall in place and they feel helpless.

All of them relived their experience of Junior School after the watching the video which comprised of their very own personal moments and images of the school that will stay in their hearts forever. With support and scaffolding from teachers our brave champions will have a smooth transition and a journey filled with achievements.

The Jodhpur –Jaislamer group comprised a group of 48 students and 5 teachers. It was a taste of Rajasthan with its unique culture and heritage. The group departed by the Mandore express on the night of 3 March. The holiday began for the 48 students at the same moment. Excited to be together in a train on an overnight journey they made most of it. The next morning the group reached the Hotel Mapple Abhay that is close to the railway station. The hotel afforded a view of the impressive Mehrangarh fort on one side and the Umaid Bhavan Palace on the other. After a breakfast with a wide variety of dishes and a quick shower the group departed for the Mehrangarh fort. The blue city of Jodhpur lay glimmering below. Folk singers sang Rajasthani melodies at every corner. The fort with its collection of palanquins, embroideries, swords, and other artifacts was a veritable feast for the eyes. The architecture and decor with the mirror rooms was a winner.

The next stop for the group was the Jaswant thada, a marble cenotaph with intricate work and well- laid out gardens. The picturesque quality of the scene was extremely pleasant. The whole city of Jodhpur appeared to have a character and depth with monuments dotting its landscape. Post lunch the group visited the Umaid Bhavan Palace with its breathtaking experience. Though there is no admission into the luxury hotel, the students were spectators to the very regal ritual of the welcoming of guests to the hotel. Long pipes are played and the drums beaten as attendants hold a red canopy over the guests as they enter the hotel. To add to the excitement of the visit the vintage car collection of Maharaja Gaj Singh welcomed the students. An impressive array of Cadillac, Buick, Rolls Royce, Morris Minor greeted the completely ecstatic group.

The day’s sightseeing concluded with a trip to the Mandore Gardens, a garden of Cenotaphs – a reminder of the artistry of Indian masons and architects. The evening in the hotel was equally enjoyable as the city of Jodhpur with its lights shone brightly with its’ jewel- in- the crown’ the Umaid Bhavan Palace glowing in the dark.

The next day the group left for Jaisalmer by bus. This journey was interesting with the view of the scrub vegetation, the village women sitting by the roadside displaying their wares and the windmills dotting the landscape.

The bus entered the golden city of Jodhpur and the students cheered as they had a glimpse of their hotel Jai Vilas, built in Rajasthan style, looking grand and inviting. The rooms did not disappoint as they had all amenities. Post- lunch the group left for the Sam sand dunes with a stopover at Kuldhara, the legendary abandoned village of the Prakrit Brahmins.

The Camel Safari provided all the action the students were looking for. Reaching the sand dunes, running up and down the students had fun. Watching the sun set , the heat of the day dissipate and the chill set in gave a taste of the desert life.

The next day involved a trip to the Gadisagar lake , a man- made lake with beautiful structures in its middle and around it. This was followed by a trip to the famed, Golden Fort. The students spent a few hours absorbing the sights and sounds of the place and souvenir shopping.

On the way back –a six hour journey, the group was treated to savouries bought in the Mehrangarh fort.  Reaching the railway station safely an hour before the departure of the Mandore Express the students were treated to a round of special Kachories, Jodhpur style.

The group arrived in Delhi early next morning after an overnight train journey.

            A Visit to Muskaan

            ‘With caring, comes courage’

            A Visit to ‘Muskaan’

We at the ‘We-Care’ club have been striving to bring out a positive change in the lives of people who need care. Such endeavours are laying the firm ground for development of empathy, affection and unconditional positive regard among our students. To encourage such efforts students of the ‘We-Care’ club visited ‘Muskaan’ on 5 March 2014 an NGO which serves adolescents and young adults with intellectual impairment. The visit was an insight into the world, unseen and on most occasions ignored.

The enthusiastic minds did rigorous preparations to bring a smile on the faces of their newly made friends at ‘Muskaan’. Students from T.A.F.S. prepared friendship bands, smiley badges and beautiful posters as a token of love for the members of the organization. Their efforts also included an energetic dance performance that made all the members of ‘Muskaan’ shake their leg along with the students. After playing the fun games and activities planned by the students everyone at the organization became playful. Students from T.A.F.S as well as ‘Muskaan’ enthusiastically played the lemon race.

‘Muskaan’ welcomed the students with open arms by orienting them about the functioning of an NGO and the commendable efforts of ‘Muskaan’. A short video capturing the voices of the inmates and stakeholders of ‘Muskaan’ was also showcased. Students were told about the relevance of collective effort and commitment to bring a desirable change in the lives of people with disability.

It was a profound experience for students as they very well understood that the abilities of people with disability speak louder than their disability. The entire experience of the visit can be summed up in the following lines,

‘Nothing that the heart gives away is ever lost, it is kept forever in the hearts of others’
